Keep Winter Skin Hydrated on a Budget

Winter is here, and with it comes the dreaded dry skin that many of us experience. No matter how much moisturizer we apply, our winter skin still feels rough and flaky. But don’t worry. I’m going to share a simple, affordable, and effective DIY skincare routine that will help keep your skin hydrated and glowing throughout the cold months.

Why Does Skin Dry Out in Winter?

Cold air, indoor heating, and harsh winds strip moisture from the skin, making it feel tight, flaky, and irritated. The key to combating this is not just moisturizing, but also exfoliating and nourishing the skin properly.

Step 1: Gentle Exfoliation with Baking Soda

Exfoliation is the first step in achieving soft, hydrated skin. Here’s how you can do it with a simple kitchen ingredient–baking soda:

  • Lather up your regular soap and sprinkle a small amount of baking soda into your palm.
  • Mix to create a paste consistency.
  • Apply the paste to your face, shoulders, back and upper arms.
  • Leave it on for a minute (or rinse immediately if you have sensitive skin).
  • Gently scrub and rinse thoroughly.

This mild exfoliation removes dead skin cells, allowing your moisturizer to penetrate deeper for better hydration.

Step 2: DIY Hydrating Lotion Blend

After cleansing and gently patting your skin dry, it’s time to lock in moisture with a nourishing blend:

  • In your palm, add a dollop of your favorite unscented lotion.
  • Mix in a small amount of vegetable glycerin (a natural humectant that attracts moisture).
  • Add a couple of pumps of rosewater, which not only hydrates but also stimulates collagen production.
  • Blend everything together and apply.

This lightweight, deeply hydrating mixture absorbs quickly, leaving your skin plump, soft, and radiant.

Why This Works

Baking soda gently removes dead skin, prepping for moisture.

Vegetable glycerin draws in hydration and keeps skin supple.

Rosewater is a natural collagen booster that improves skin texture over time.

By following this simple procedure a few times weekly, or depending on your skin sensitivity, you’ll notice a significant improvement in your skin’s hydration and overall appearance within just a few days. Say goodbye to winter dryness and hello to soft, glowing skin.

Happy moisturizing!
