reject stereotypes

Introduction

As I conclude my series on healthy aging, it is essential to highlight a crucial element of aging well. Rejecting ageist stereotypes and cultivating a positive mindset. Multiple studies show that how we perceive and approach aging significantly influences our overall quality of life. In this article, I explore how to cultivate a positive mindset by embracing aging as a time of growth, and the role of mindfulness and meditation in maintaining emotional health.

The Ageist Narrative

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines the word “mindset” as: a mental attitude or inclination; a fixed state of mind. The Harvard Gazette article, “America’s graying. We need to change the way we think about age,” highlights a fundamental problem. Our mental attitudes about aging are responsible for the expectations we have and the assumptions we make about how older people should look and behave.

Do you apologize for having “senior moments,” comment about being “too old” to wear certain clothing or criticize yourself for being “slow?” How often do we hear or tell stories about frail, forgetful “old folks,” who are resistant to change or less competent than younger people?

How we think about age and talk about aging is often focused on anti-aging products and the promise of extended beauty, health problems, inevitable losses, and death. As Mirta Cerioli writes in their article, “Challenging aging stereotypes & ageism in beauty,” internalized ageism and the widely accepted national narrative on aging chip away at self-esteem and self-worth. Consequently, negative stereotypes around aging leave people feeling undervalued, marginalized, or pressured to conform to societal standards of beauty and behavior.1

Rewrite the Narrative: Own What You Got!

Therefore, reject aging stereotypes because they negatively affect your health. Refuse to view aging as a medical event. Instead, understand that aging is a life process.

Learn to focus on strengths that come with healthy aging such as:

  • A heightened sense of fulfillment in daily life
  • Improved abilities to solve problems
  • Stronger emotional balance during crises
  • Exciting opportunities for personal growth and expertise
  • Freedom from societal expectations around image and conduct
  • A deeper appreciation for your authentic self

The Importance of Mindset in Aging Well

Positive Attitudes Toward Aging Influence Health Outcomes

Research shows that positive states of mind toward aging lead to better physical and mental health outcomes. In addition, people who view aging as a natural and enriching process tend to experience lower levels of stress, worry, depression, and anger. Interested in achieving their highest form of authentic self-expression, they do not view aging as a challenge to overcome.

More importantly, people who have positive attitudes about aging are more likely to practice healthy behaviors. As a result, they enjoy improved heart health, greater mobility, and may live longer.

Strategies to Cultivate Optimism and a Growth Mindset

In her article “Embracing Change: The Key to Growth and Resilience,”2 author Sweta Sinha notes that adopting a growth mindset (the belief that we can improve our abilities and intelligence) promotes resilience and adaptability, strengths which I believe will serve us well in our later years.

Strategies to cultivate a positive mindset as we age include:

  • Ignoring aging stereotypes: Stop stereotyping yourself and others.
  • Focusing on the beauty of aging: Identify aspects of aging that please you.
  • Practicing gratitude: Who are you grateful to and for what are you thankful?
  • Savoring moments: As you go about your day, deliberately focus on your senses. What positive emotions do you enjoy, for example, while taking a shower, eating a delicious meal or taking a walk outside?
  • Immersing yourself in positivity: Spend time with people who uplift and inspire you.
  • Shifting negative attitudes: Transform self-defeating thoughts and beliefs into empowering ones by seeing challenges as learning opportunities.

Embracing Aging as a Time of Growth

Reframing Aging as a Time to Learn, Grow & Adapt

Aging is a gift in that we can choose to receive its power to change dramatically. What more in your life would you like to accomplish? Who do you no longer wish to be?

Learn to recognize and seize opportunities for personal growth and self-improvement. Don’t focus on perceived losses and, instead, consider the boons of aging: wisdom, experience, and the freedom to explore new interests.

Reframe aging as a dynamic phase in life that brings about an alteration in our appearance, character, and circumstances. Doing so shifts the dominant narrative from decline to one of possibility. Change your perspective and you will begin to see the process of aging as a period of divine transformation, ripe with potential.

Tips for Managing the Inevitable Changes of Aging

  • Stay active: Engage in regular physical activity to preserve mobility and enhance your mood.
  • Stay connected: Build new friendships and nurture existing relationships to reduce loneliness and sustain your sense of belonging.
  • Practice self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness and understanding instead of harsh judgment. Recognize that suffering is a natural part of the human experience, a concept Buddhist teaching describes as one of The Four Noble Truths. Acknowledge and accept your negative emotions without letting them dominate your focus. Nurture a balanced and caring perspective towards yourself.
  • Plan: Reduce uncertainty by anticipating and preparing for changes, whether financial, physical, or emotional.

Mindfulness and Meditation for Emotional Health

The Benefits of Mindfulness Practices

Mindfulness (the practice of becoming aware of your surroundings and internal states of being) reduces stress, improves focus, and promotes emotional well-being. For older adults, mindfulness routines manage anxiety about aging and provide tools to cope with life’s challenges.

Simple Mindfulness Techniques for Daily Life

Learning to be attentive, aware, and fully present during daily routines is simple and rewarding. Here are a few techniques.

  • Breathing exercises: Spend five minutes focusing on deep, intentional breaths. Inhale for a count of four, hold for four, exhale for four, hold for four and start again.
  • Body inventory: Lie down or sit comfortably and focus your attention on various parts of your body. Start at your toes and move upward to your head. Pay attention to how your feel. What emotions do you notice? Physical aches and pains?
  • Mindful walks: Take a walk while paying attention, for example, to traffic noise, birdsong, the sound of your feet hitting the pavement. Observe trees, houses, and animals. Notice smells in the air. Fully engage your senses.
  • Gratitude journaling: End each day by noting three things for which you are thankful and appreciate.

Conclusion

A positive mindset isn’t just a feel-good idea. It’s a powerful tool to greatly improve your overall well-being as you grow older. To cultivate a positive mindset around aging requires breaking free from internalized ageism. Therefore, we must dismantle negative stereotypes surrounding the natural process of aging. By embracing growth, practicing mindfulness, and infusing your journey with optimism, you have the power to turn your later years into a vibrant, fulfilling, and rewarding chapter of your life.
